Rand Paul & Chris Coons: The Founding Fathers Would Have Protected Your Smartphone

Posted: 28 May 2014 04:42 AM PDT

By SEN. RAND PAUL and SEN. CHRIS COONS | May 27, 2014
Published in Politico

Privacy is a core American value. For 235 years, the Fourth Amendment has protected us from unwarranted searches of our personal belongings. All the while, technology has been changing where and how we keep those belongings. On April 29, the Supreme Court held oral arguments in two cases, Riley v. California and United States v. Wurie. At question is whether the police can search the contents of a phone without a warrant during an arrest. At stake is whether technological advancements have rendered one of our most treasured civil liberties obsolete.

Today, many Americans keep their entire lives on their phones: family photos, emails, calendar appointments, Internet searches and even location history. Considered separately, each of these categories can reveal very private information. Taken together, they can present a pretty good picture of who you are, what you do, where you go, what you read and what you write. What protection does the Constitution offer them from suspicionless search by the government?

The Fourth Amendment grants to the people the right to be "secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures." It did not find its way into the Constitution by accident. It was, rather, a specific response to a principal grievance of colonial Americans under British rule — namely, the use of the "general warrant" whereby the crown gave officials almost unfettered authority to search colonial homes, rifle through papers and scour personal belongings.

DETROIT: Men Thought To Be Impersonating Cops Robbing People, Turned Out To Just Be Cops Robbing People

Posted: 28 May 2014 04:39 AM PDT

DETROIT (WJBK) – A Good Samaritan snapped photos of what appeared to be two men impersonating police officers involved in a pistol-whipping and robbery outside a Citgo gas station on Detroit's east side on July 21.

Once Fox 2 aired those photos, an even more disturbing picture developed.

"Several unidentified police officers were working this particular robbery case, recognized one of the suspects in the photographs as being a member of the Detroit Police Department," Chief James Craig said Monday.

If you ever went to public school and want to know all the head games they put into you this is a must read book.

Prologue

The shocking possibility that dumb people don't exist in sufficient numbers to warrant the millions of careers devoted to tending them will seem incredible to you. Yet that is my central proposition: the mass dumbness which justifies official schooling first had to be dreamed of; it isn't real.

A Modest Proposal to Ban Volunteering

Posted: 28 May 2014 02:59 AM PDT

[SATIRE]

President Obama and congressional Democrats are hoping they can make political hay out of campaigning to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.

A. Barton Hinkle | May 26, 2014
Reason

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray wants to raise it to $15. And social-justice activists there say even that falls far too short. How right they are! If people aren't allowed to work for $7.24 an hour, even if they want to, then they darn well shouldn't be allowed to work for $0 an hour either.

But if we are serious about addressing economic inequality and restoring social justice, then a minimum wage increase should be just the start. We also need to outlaw volunteering.
