United States President Barack Obama announced Friday afternoon that he's accepted the resignation of White House press secretary Jay Carney.

Josh Earnest, the White House special assistant to the president and principal deputy press secretary, will assume Carney's role, Obama said during a surprise appearance from the commander-in-chief during a scheduled briefing Friday afternoon.

"His name describes his demeanor," Obama said of the incoming press secretary. "Josh is an earnest guy and you can't find just a nicer individual."

The Hill: Ron Paul, Pure Libertarian, Sorely Missed in DC

Congress is a lesser place, and Washington is a lesser town, without the presence of one of my favorite members of Congress, the great libertarian of our generation, former Rep. Ron Paul (R) of Texas. I wrote about Ron Paul often, sometimes in agreement, often in disagreement, but always with respect for his pure-play libertarian philosophy.

In some ways, but not all ways, we have begun to enter a libertarian generation with increasing common areas of agreement between conservative libertarians and progressive libertarians on matters such as limiting the abuses of National Security Agency (NSA) eavesdropping.

Exclusive: Libertarian Candidate for Governor Arrested For Gathering Signatures

Posted: 30 May 2014 10:34 AM PDT

According to the Minnesota Libertarian Party, Candidates of minor political parties in Minnesota need to gather 2000 signatures during a two week period that ends June 3rd to be listed on the ballot for state-wide races. That was what Holbrook was attempting to do when he was approached by five local park police officers.

"The officers asked for my ID which I refused because I had committed no crime. He ordered that we stop filming him with our cell phone cameras which he said was illegal. He then grabbed me, twisted my arm and smashed me against his vehicle."

49 House Republicans Vote for States Rights

Posted: 30 May 2014 08:52 AM PDT

The House of Representatives voted early Friday morning to ban the Department of Justice from spending money to combat medical marijuana in states that allow it.

The fate of the proposal, offered as a spending bill amendment by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., and 11 colleagues, was uncertain ahead of the vote, with many backers cautiously pessimistic about its chances.

The amendment won surprisingly strong approval in a 219-189 vote that blurred party lines.

Daniel Ellsberg: Snowden would not get a fair trial – and Kerry is wrong

Posted: 30 May 2014 07:32 AM PDT

John Kerry was in my mind Wednesday morning, and not because he had called me a patriot on NBC News. I was reading the lead story in the New York Times – "US Troops to Leave Afghanistan by End of 2016" – with a photo of American soldiers looking for caves. I recalled not the Secretary of State but a 27-year-old Kerry, asking, as he testified to the Senate about the US troops who were still in Vietnam and were to remain for another two years: How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?

Light topic break: what's your favorite ride?

Posted: 29 May 2014 11:27 PM PDT

Everybody has a favorite ride. For some like BMWJim it's motorcycles of the Bavarian variety. ChristianAnarchist has a Ron Paul wrapped sports car. A noted contemporary native american prophet called Red-X is said to drive around in the sky in a flying Cadillac. I bet some of us love riding bicycles, maybe skateboards, snow shoes, what have you but tonight I took a walk down memory lane and I remember my favorite vehicle.

Feast your eyes on this, this used to be what I drove at work:

The ark is too sterile.

I guess there's something to be said for "trolls" after all. They sure kept the place exciting, invigorating.

It's like a sterile microcosm without them. A 'clean room' with nothing to perk your interest and combative instincts.

It's like being in a white room, with white floors, and everyone wearing white suits, sipping tea and offering each other white powdered sugar donuts.

Trolls were actually amusing and fun to bat around.
