Reason: Was the Iraq War a Complete Waste?

Posted: 14 Jun 2014 07:18 AM PDT

It gets increasingly difficult to imagine that the U.S. has gained anything worthwhile from its invasion of Iraq.

David Harsanyi | June 13, 2014 | Reason

Let's just say that the Iraq army isn't exactly anchoring a democratic awakening in the Middle East.

Earlier this week, Iraq's armed forces in Mosul—trained and supplied by the United States to secure the well-being of its people and institutions—reportedly dropped their guns, shed their uniforms, and surrendered to black-flag-waving Sunni insurgents in a mere four days. No Thermopylae here. About a half-million civilians have left the second-largest city in Iraq to flee what is surely going to become a hotbed of beheadings and other assorted acts of jihad. And now, according to CNN, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria also has almost complete control of Tikrit. Al-Qaida (or something very much like it) is definitely on the run—right toward our allies.

Not that we should be surprised. Back in 2010, Army Gen. George Casey warned that the 130,000-strong Iraqi police and soldiers lacked leaders, were deserting by the thousands, were hampered by corruption, displayed little will to fight, and would probably never be able to fend off insurgents. Obviously, not much has changed, despite President Barack Obama's assertion in 2011 that the war was over and "Iraqis have taken full responsibility for their country's security."

Rand Paul Met With Major GOP Donors and Talked About Making a Big Change to the Party Platform

Posted: 14 Jun 2014 07:10 AM PDT

The Blaze: Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) met with about 25 major Republican donors on Wednesday to discuss making changes to the 2016 Republican Party platform to draw in more young voters, including potentially changing the party's approach to same-sex marriage.

All of the donors present had contributed the maximum $32,400 to the Republican National Committee, said Shaun McCutcheon, who was the lead plaintiff in this year's landmark McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission Supreme Court case.

"I heard them saying, these donors of the committee, that they really want to reach their own children," McCutcheon told TheBlaze. "One of them had 15 grandkids. They feel like they're not on board with the platform. They want to change the platform is what I heard so that we can reach their kids."

Big Business Vs. Libertarians in the GOP

Posted: 14 Jun 2014 06:21 AM PDT

The Daily Beast:

In Michigan business leaders are funding financial consultant Brian Ellis's primary challenge to Rep. Justin Amash. Since his election in the 2010 tea party wave, Amash has emerged as the most libertarian member of the House of Representatives. He's second to McClintock on the National Taxpayers Union spending-vote ratings. He organized a bipartisan effort to rein in the National Security Agency that came within a few votes of passing the House. He heads the House Liberty Caucus. He Amash told the New York Times, "I follow a set of principles, I follow the Constitution. And that's what I base my votes on. Limited government, economic freedom and individual liberty."

So why wouldn't Grand Rapids business leaders be proud to have such a widely admired young representative? They say they want a congressman who will work with others to "get things done." Andrew Johnston, the political director of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, told the Wall Street Journal, "There is frustration among those who think his rigidity makes it difficult to move forward on legislation." He promised that Ellis "will have access to funds that will be helpful to his campaign."

When my daughter turns 16

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 08:08 PM PDT

First, she will be getting a great used car that is very safe. My daughter ranks at the top of her class, not because I hound her mind you, but because her father instilled curiousity and principles into her.

The greatest wont be giving her the keys to her car, it will giving her my password to the DailyPaul.

I want her to know my positions. I do not force my child into anything other than living by certain principles. Im honest with her about everything pertaining to life. (Who I may be seeing is a different story, no worries tho, only one woman has met her.)

Clever piece of code exposes hidden changes to Supreme Court opinions

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 07:21 PM PDT

by Jeff John Roberts | GigaOM

SUMMARY: The Supreme Court has long made surreptitious changes to its opinions without telling anyone. In response, a coder has created a tool that flags and publicizes those changes.

Supreme Court opinions are the law of the land, and so it's a problem when the Justices change the words of the decisions without telling anyone. This happens on a regular basis, but fortunately a lawyer in Washington appears to have just found a solution.

The issue, as Adam Liptak explained in the New York Times, is that original statements by the Justices about everything from EPA policy to American Jewish communities, are disappearing from decisions — and being replaced by new language that says something entirely different. As you can imagine, this is a problem for lawyers, scholars, journalists and everyone else who relies on Supreme Court opinions.

Until now, the only way to detect when a decision has been altered is a pain-staking comparison of earlier and later copies — provided, of course, that someone knew a decision had been changed in the first place. Thanks to a simple Twitter tool, the process may become much easier.

CIA Rendition Jet Was Waiting In Europe To Snatch Snowden

Unmarked Gulfstream tracked as it passed above UK

By Duncan Campbell, 13 Jun 2014
The Register

As the whistleblowing NSA sysadmin Edward Snowden made his dramatic escape to Russia a year ago, a secret US government jet - previously employed in CIA "rendition" flights on which terror suspects disappeared into invisible "black" imprisonment - flew into Europe in a bid to spirit him back to America, the Register can reveal.

On the evening of 24 June 2013, as Snowden arrived in Moscow from Hong Kong intending to fly on to Cuba, an unmarked Gulfstream V business jet - tail number N977GA - took off from a quiet commercial airport 30 miles from Washington DC. Manassas Regional Airport discreetly offers its clients "the personal accommodations and amenities you can't find at commercial airports".

Early next morning, N977GA was detected heading east over Scotland at the unusually high altitude of 45,000 feet. It had not filed a flight plan, and was flying above the level at which air traffic control reporting is mandatory.

I love you all

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 06:18 PM PDT

who I know
in those rare instances
when I love myself

You are of greater worth
Than any point
Any argument to be won

You could be wrong
Or maybe I am
1000 times
Your worth to me
Would not diminish
I am yours, you are mine

You put up with me
I put up with you
Our group
is more than points of view

People are stronger than facts
Love is greater than truth
Points of logic pale beside
Little human acts

Divided by much space
Physical and ideological
Nonetheless we find our place
There is always a place for you
And one for a 3BILL

A positive article in the FORBES about the free state project in New Hampshire. You will see a lot of familiar names.

If you were not sure what to do or where to move: New Hampshire is a good state to consider moving.
